The Legend of Dozemary Pool

Local legend has it that Dozemary Pool, located on the Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England is where Sir Bedivere threw Excalibur back into the Lake after the Final Battle between King Arthur and his knights and Sir Mordred. Bedivere was so enticed by the beauty of the sword, that it look him three attempts before he finally tossed the weapon out into the lake. When he finally complied with King Arthur’s wishes and threw the sword, a hand arose from the water and took hold of the sword by the hilt. The hand brandished the sword three times before withdrawing it down into the water.

Dozemary Pool is one of several different sites where this encounter supposedly could have taken place. Pomparles Bridge, at Glastonbury as well as Looe Pool and Llyn Llydaw in Wales are other sites that claim this legend as well. In reality, despite its atmospheric setting high on Bodmin Moor, Dozemary is one of the least likely sites for the last resting place of Excalibur. For one thing, it is too far from any of the traditional sites of the Battle of Camlan, where Arthur received his fatal wound; for another, despite stories of the lake being bottomless, it is far from that and in fact dried up almost entirely in 1859, making it an unlikely home for the Lady of the Lake.
